DANGERS OF BONSAI


As much as it looks like a peacefull and relaxing hobby, daily bonsai care can be pretty dangerous if you are not paying attention.
And I am not even talking about collecting yamadori in the wild where you can meet some wild animals or slide down the hill and break your neck.
When I was returning from watering yamadori trees that I am growing in the ground in the back garden on sunday, I was looking down and didn´t notice low branch on an old tree that was there for ages.
I only noticed when I was knocked down on the ground by it with stream of blood running down my forehead.
I was pretty shaken, and my head still hurts as I am writing this on monday, but I managed to stop the bleeding quite fast - first scaring the shit out of my gf when she saw me with whole face and hands covered in blood :D
As I had the time with my daughter due in a few minutes, I didn´t go to the hospital and tried to man up. And I hoped I didn´t do too much damage to my already stupid head.
Here is the pic with my baby 2 hours later. I think I got me some new scars.

NEBEZPEČENSTVÁ BONSAISTIKY


Aj keď to vyzerá ako pokojný a relaxačný koníček, denná starostlivosť o bonsaje môže byť dosť nebezpečná keď nedávate pozor.
A to ani nepíšem o kopaní yamadori kde môžte zažiť stret s divokými zvermi, alebo sa šmyknúť dole kopcom a zlomiť si krk.
Keď som sa vracal z polievania yamadori stromčekov v zadnej záhradke, pozeral som na zem a nevšimol som si konár starého stromu, ktorý je tam už celé veky.
Všimol som si ho až keď som ležal na zemi s krvou stekajúcou po tvári.
Doslova ma knokautovala a bol som totálne otrasený.
Ešte stále ma bolí hlava keď toto píšem v pondelok, ale krvácanie sa mi podarilo zastaviť dosť rýchle - no až potom čo som riadne vystrašil priateľku, ktorá bola z pohľadu na moju skrvavenú tvár a ruky v riadnom šoku :D
Keďže som mal byť o pár minút s dcérkou na pár hodín, skúsil som sa vzmužiť a nešiel som sa dať vyšetriť - a dúfal som že som nenarobil veľa škody na mojej už teraz sprostej hlave.

BONSAI CLUB KOŠICE WORKSHOP


We had a club meeting last saturday, my first ever, and it was very nice and enjoyable sunny day.
I had the pleasure to meet very experienced bonsai enthusiasts as well as 2 professionals.
One of them was the president of slovakian bonsai assosiation Juraj Szabó, the other one Mr. Július Kolesár, the name well known in our city from every bonsai exhibition, for his trees are always among the best.
Meeting was held at beautifull japanese bonsai garden of Peter Vitéz, who organized everything and provided us with beer and very tasty goulash soup.
There were only six trees for consultation and styling, as it was too hot for some members to work at all, and they came there to enjoy the event and help others.

Workshop košického bonsai klubu


V sobotu sme mali stretnutie košického bonsai klubu, a bol to krásny a príjemný slnečný deň.
Mal som to potešenie zoznámiť sa so skúsenými bonsajovými nadšencami, ako aj s dvomi profesionálmi.
Jeden bol Juraj Szabó, president slovenskej bonsajovej asociácie, druhý Pán Július Kolesár, meno známe z rôznych celoštátnych výstav, kde jeho stromy patria stále medzi tie najlepšie.
Stretnutie sa konalo v prekrásnej japonskej bonsajovej záhrade Petra Vitéza, ktorý to zorganizoval a zásoboval nás pivom a výborným guľášom.
Mali sme tam len 6 stromov na konzultácie a tvarovanie, keďže pre niektorých členov bolo príliš horúco robiť čokoľvek, a prišli sa len stretnúť s kamarátmi a poskytnúť rady ostatným členom.

My spruce yamadori - first styling was done by Juraj Szabó.

It was a bit different than my vision, but his experienced eye made a way nicer tree out of it.

The tree was collected only last year, but this first styling wasn´t very harsh and shouldn´t harm the tree.

Môj yamadori smrek - menšie prvé tvarovanie bolo spravené Jurajom Szabóm.

Je to trošku iné ako som mal ja v pláne, ale vďaka jeho skúsenému oku je z toho oveľa krajší strom ako by bol keby sme dodržali môj zámer.

Strom bol kopaný len minulý rok, ale toto prvé tvarovanie nebolo nijako náročné, len sa rozložili vetvy, a nemalo by to stromčeku ublížiť.

TRIBUTE TO MY ANCESTORS


This is the video I made after my granddad died recently aged 84, and is dedicated to my ancestors, and especially to him.
His main passion ever since he retired was his garden with over 20 fruit bearing trees and lots of vegetables that he grew and cared for with my grandma.
In recent years he wasn´t talking about anything else and was very proud of it.
As it is with older folks that always talk the same things, I didn´t pay much attention.
But neither did he when I was talking about my new passion that is bonsai.
He was slowly moving away from us at that stage and was mostly living in memories and the world of his own.
In the last days, when he wasn´t recognizing us - his family at some stages, in moments of clear mind he was happy that he was talking to me remembering my childhood and happy days together.
I loved him, he loved me, and this is tribute and a way of saying thank you for everything.

POCTA MOJÍM PREDKOM


Toto video som dal dokopy potom, čo mi nedávno zomrel starý apo vo veku 84 rokov, a je venované všetkým mojím predkom, a špeciálne jemu.
Jeho hlavnou vášňou odkedy šiel do dôchodku bola jeho záhrada s vyše 20timi ovocnými stromami a kopou zeleniny, ktorú pestovali s mojou starou mamkou.
V posledných rokoch o ničom inom nerozprával a bol na ňu veľmi hrdý.
Ako to už býva so starými ľuďmi, ktorí rozprávajú stále o tom istom, nevenoval som mu veľa pozornosti.
Ale ani on mne, keď som rozprával o svojej novej vášni - bonsajoch.
Pomaličky sa nám v tom čase už vzďaľoval a žil prevažne vo svojom svete a spomienkach.
V posledných dňoch, kedy nás už miestami nespoznával, v chvíľkach čistej mysle bol šťastný že sme spolu rozprávali a spomínali na moje detstvo a šťastné spoločné dni.
Ľúbil som ho, on ľúbil mňa - a toto video je pocta jemu a spôsob ako mu za všetko poďakovať.

SUPERMARKET FICUS AIR LAYERING


Today I examined the rootball of ficus that my dad bought for me from supermarket this spring as I noticed some roots sticking out of the substrate yesterday, and I thought there were enough of them to support the air layer, so I went to cut it off.
It took about a month for roots to develop.

Vzdušné potápanie fikusu zo supermarketu


Dnes som skontroloval korene na potopenom fikuse, ktorý mi na jar kúpil otec pri otvorení predajne OBI v Košiciach, keďže som si včera všimol že po mesiaci korene už trčia aj na povrchu substrátu.
Zhodnotil som že by ich malo byť dosť na prežitie potopenca a tak som ho odstrihol.
Tu sú fotky fikusu po zakúpení, plán, potopený stromček a časti po oddelení.

Over the weeked I trimmed overgrown leaves of hornbeams on penjing number 6 and rebuilt railway feature from scratch as the track was completelly destroyed by birds that were looking for food in it.

Cez víkend som ostrihal prerastené listy na penjingu 6 a znovu vybudoval železničnú trať, ktorá bola totálne zničená vtákmi, ktoré v nej hľadali potravu.

AIRLAYERING 2016


Here are some trees and wines that I am trying to airlayer this year.
I started with ficus from supermarket, I want to have 3 pieces out of it.
Then I continued with wisteria that is not intended for bonsai, but for another garden tree.
I probably cut too deep and all the leaves dried out, but I still hope it will be ok because of some long branchces that are still green.
Same happened with 2 grape wines, I disposed of 1 of them and the other still have some leaves so it maght make it.
Then I went to grandparents garden and continued with plum tree, quince, pear and cherry tree.

VZDUŠNÉ POTÁPANIE 2016


Tu je zopár stromov a rastlín, ktoré skúšam rozmnožiť vzdušným potápaním toho roku.
Začal som fikusom zo supermarketu z ktorého by som chcel mať 3 kúsky.
Pokračoval som wistériou, z ktorej by mal byť ďalší záhradný stromček - no asi som rezal príliš hlboko a všetky listy hneď zoschli - ale stále dúfam že to dá, lebo má ešte pár zelených konárikov.
Hlboko som rezal asi aj na viniči, jeden som už rovno odrezal lebo celý potopenec vyschol, no na druhom je ešte pár lístkov, takže to možno dá.
Potom som šiel do záhrady starkých a pokračoval som so slivkou, dulou, hruškou a čerešňou.

And now sad news - these trees didn´t survive last year´s collection :(

Lessons were learned - Pine was collected in late summer with not a great rootball, Hornbeam in autumn with not a great rootball too, although on a photo it seems that rootball was ok, after washing away all the foreign roots, the tree was left with just a few of them.

It is a pity that I haven´t heard about sweating when I collected these.

A teraz smutné správy - tieto stromy neprežili minuloročné výkopy :(

Borovica mala veľmi málo koreňov, hrab tiež, aj keď na fotke to tak nevyzerá, po premytí ostalo len zopár vlastných.

Škoda že vtedy, keď som ich kopal som o potení ešte nečítal.

And another tree that was purchased with all the other elms I got me last year and treated and wintered the same as others, but is showing no buds at all and is probably dead, - although the tiny branches are still green on the inside.

I guess that in very little substrate I grew it in on that rock he might had no chance against early frosts in autumn and maybe the substrate got dry on some occasion in the winter storage although I have been checking the trees every day and watered them as needed.

A ďalší strom, ktorý bol kúpený s ostatnými mojími brestmi, a tiež o neho bolo rovnako postarané, no nemá žiadné puky a asi je mrtvy - aj keď konáriky sú stále zelené vo vnútri.

Tipujem že tá trocha substrátu v ktorej som nechal tento stromček rásť mohla počas zimy na chvíľku preschnúť, aj keď som stromčeky kontroloval každý deň,

alebo mu mohli ublížiť skoré jesenné mrazy.

I hope that due to all the stuff I learned so far and all the precautions I am now taking, these trees have been very last ones that died on me.

And how are the other elms?

Some of them are just opening the buds, some growing like mad already.

Dúfam, že vďaka tomu čo som sa doteraz naučil a vďaka opatrnosti s ktorou už k tomu pristupujem boli tieto stromčeky posledné, ktoré mi odišli.

A ako sa majú ostatné bresty?

Niektoré ešte len otváraju puky, iné už rastú ako divé.
