MY FIRST GRAFTING .... ALMOST


My penjing number 4 with ficuses lived and prospered over the winter on my large window sill.
I didn´t cut a single branch, preparing them to be grafted lower on the trunk of the main tree when being moved outside for summer, because no buds appeared after last year deep cutting.
Today was the day.

Prvý pokus s vrúbľovaním ... skoro


Fikusy na mojom penjingu číslo 4 sa mali dobre na mojom veľkom parapete cez zimu.
Nestrihol som na nich ani konárik a pripravoval si ich na vrúbľovanie nižšie na kmeni hlavného stromčeka, pretože po minuloročnom strihaní sa dole žiadne puky neobjavili.
Dnes som sa do toho šiel pustiť pred premiestnením penjingu von na leto.

Preriedil som konáriky a pripravil jeden na vrúbľovanie

And then I got me thinking about an idea I got earlier - I only have one suitable scion, it is going to take time for it to merge, then I have to do it twice more .... after looking at how nicely branches developed at the last year´s cut I made a decision and went for it.

A potom som začal premýšľať nad možnosťou ktorá ma už predtým napadla - keďže mám len jeden vhodný konárik, bude to trvať kým sa chytí a ešte to budem musieť dvakrát zopakovať - a po preskúmaní ako pekne sa na mieste minuloročného rezania vetvy rýchle rozkonárili som sa rozhodol a šiel na to.

This way I lost one growing season, I should have cut this deep the first time, but I had no experience with ficuses and didn´t know they tend to bud only on top.

Since I spared some time of the day by this quick problem solving, I attended to one overgrown blackthorn that I want to train in weeping style with clip and grow technique.

Tým pádom som stratil jednu sezónu rastu, mal som takto hlboko zrezať už prvýkrát, no nemal som s fikusmi žiadnu skúsenosť a nevedel som že pukajú len hore na reze.

Keďže som ušetril troška času týmto rýchlym riešením, mohol som sa trošku povenovať aj jednej prerastenej trnke, ktorú chcem technikou clip and grow vytvarovať do weeping formy.

NOVÉ BOROVICE A NOVÁ RASTOVÁ SEZÓNA


3 new yamadori pines in my collection, collected from concrete slabs with flat rootballs again.
3 nové yamadori borovice v mojej zbierke, vyzdvihnuté opäť s plytkým koreňovým balom z betónových plátov.

Yamadori breza ktorá bola dva roky v zemi v záhradke rodičov presadená na nové miesto.

Ešte musím niečo spraviť s tou susedovou škaredou stenou.

WISTERIA AIRLAYER IN BLOOM

I did some carving on this one in february, my second carving attempt,and after removing rotting wood in touch with substrate I treated the deadwood with the fungicide coat that soaked into the wood. After it dried out I painted a coat of "Ship warnish" onto it - our substitute for wood hardener. I am happy with the results (not with carving - I got a lot to learn yet) wisteria survived it, deadwood is hard as a rock and the plant is sportingsome nice of flowers.

Potopenec wistérie v kvete

Na tejto rastline som koncom februára skúšal druhýkrát frézovať. Po odstránení hnijúceho dreva ktoré bolo v styku so substrátom som na drevo pod tým naniesol nasiakavý fungicídny prípravok a keď vyschol, natrel som ho lodným lakom. Až na to frézkovanie som s výsledkom spokojný, wistéria prežila, drevo je tvrdé ako skala a rastlina pekne zakvitla.

And this was my first carving attempt - chinese elm from penjing number 3 - the right front branch died after I used firelighter to burn the threads of the carved wood and burned all of the buds on it I guess  - I don´t have the proper torch ... but it was stupid anyway...I should have figured out other way to do it.
Now I have to build some proper crown on it.

A tu je môj prvý pokus o frézovanie - čínsky brest z penjingu číslo 3.
Predná pravá vetva odišla asi po tom čo som zapaľovačom opaľoval mrtve drevo pod ňou a asi spálil všetky puky.
Nemám poriadný horák - ale bola to hlúposť robiť to takto aj tak.....
Teraz musím stromčeku vybudovať poriadnu korunu.

Emma čaká pri našom potopencovi wistérie. Tešíme sa na plný rozkvet už čoskoro :)

PENJING NUMBER 9


Last year I styled one juniper "green carpet" from garden centre.
During the winter few branches that were cracked while styling died away.
I wasn´t happy about doing anything with the tree that was so heavily abused last year, but I couldn´t stand the thought of it growing in original garden centre substrate that was always soggy.
Especially when it´s juniper.
So today I decided that it has to be repoted - the sooner the better.
After washing away soil from the outer spaces of rootball, I was happy to find out that most of the roots are fine roots and I don´t have to cut any major thick roots, and I am able to considerably decrease the size of the rootball in one go.
It gave me the opportunity to spare the container I had at hand for it and use marble plate prepared for another penjing last year.
I will leave the tree alone now for some 2 seasons and then it will be restyled completelly to better compliment the landscape.

PENJING ČÍSLO 9


Minulý rok som si natvaroval borievku "zelený koberec" zo záhradníctva.
Cez zimu jej vyschli vetvy, ktoré boli pri tvarovaní nalomené, čo sa dalo čakať.
Dnes som sa veľmi nerád podujal stromček presadiť, aj keď s neľahkým srdcom kvôli tomu trápeniu čo som mu spôsobil minulý rok, no rástol ešte v pôvodnom substráte zo záhradníctva, ktorý bol vkuse premočený.
Po tom čo som vymyl substrát z vonkajších častí koreňového balu som zistil že dve tretiny sú všetko jemné korienky, vlásočnice a nemusím strihať žiadne hrubé korene.
To mi umožnilo dve tretiny aj odstrihnúť a stále ostalo dostatok na vyživovanie rastliny.
Nemusel som ani použiť len o trošku menšiu misku ako bola pôvodná a rovno som mohol použiť mramorovú platňu, ktorú som minulého roku pripravil na ďalšiu krajinku.
Teraz nechám stromček v kľude aspoň 2 sezóny a potom bude pretvarovaný aby lepšie ladil s krajinkou.

 

AN ODE TO "SWEATING"


I love "sweating".
I have read about it last year on a blog by Tony Tickle - here´s the link for you:

It helped one rootless hawthorn with trunk diameter of about 15 cm to root last year, and one blackthorn is alive and well thanx to it as well I believe, starting it´s second season as a prebonsai.
So this year I decided that all of my deciduous yamadori, freshly collected trees will be subjected to sweating to maximize their chances of survival.
Now here are some pics of some of them after a month in black bags.
There are still 2 trees left that show no signs of life yet, one of them japanese maple with great potencial, so I keep my fingers crossed tightly for that one, and hope that it didn´t bled out all of it´s energy through the large cuts I performed on it.
But here´s the pics of the ones that I believe made it:

Minulý rok mi táto technika pomohla zakoreniť vyvalený hloh bez koreňov s priemerom asi 15 cm a taktiež jedna trnka vykopaná skoro bez koreňov je verím že nažive tiež vďaka tomu.
Takže tohto roku som pre istotu dal do čiernych vriec všetky opadavé vykopané stromčeky, aby som zvýšil ich šance na prežitie.
Tu je pár fotiek po mesiaci vo vreciach.
Ešte 2 stromčeky nejavia žiadne známky života, jeden z nich je japonský javor s veľkým potenciálom, takže ešte stále držím prsty pevne zovreté aby to dal.
Ale späť k tým, ktoré sú už verím že "za vodou" :)

So this is it, I consider this technique much better way of increasing your chances for collected trees to root and survive collection than preparing them for a few years for collection on a spot in the wild and worrying that they might get crushed by tractors.
Since they´re still in bags, they will be protected against late spring frosts so even less worries for me :)



Tak to je všetko, myslím si že táto technika je oveľa lepšou alternatívou k pripravovaniu stromčekov na ich pôvodnom stanovišti počas pár rokov na zvýšenie šance ich ujatia sa, a obáv či ich zatiaľ nejaký traktor nevykĺči.

A keďže sú stále vo vreciach, odpadá mi aj starosť o neskoré jarné prízemne mrazy, povyberám ich z vriec až keď pominú :)
